Deccan College
Archaeology Museum (DCAM) was started for the Masters and PhD students of Deccan
College which exhibited the artefacts collected by Prof. H.D. Sankalia and
Research Scholars from 1939 onwards. The artefacts were first kept for display
in the main administrative building in the year 1940 but since Deccan College
took part in many excavations and collected huge amount of cultural material, a
new building was constructed in 1962 and the first floor was completely
dedicated to museum displaying objects of human past.
Aims & Objectives of Deccan College Archaeology
Museum-
- The main aim of Deccan College museum is educational. It displays selective cultural remains of the human past and is aimed to provide information on Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology to students, teachers as well as general public.
- To introduce archaeology to general public and school teachers in rural and urban areas, through outreach programmes i.e. exhibition and one-day teacher's workshop in the month of July (since 1996).
- To provide research facility to researchers, on the collections, which are original antiquities from excavated and explored sites by Deccan College throughout India. Thus, serves as excellent study source to scholars and students engaged in archaeological/cultural research.

The museum has eight galleries
each devoted to various branches of archaeology. These are as follows:

- Protohistory Gallery
- Megalithic Gallery
- Early History Gallery
- Art and Architecture Gallery
- Epigraphy and Numismatics Gallery
- Ethno-archaeology Gallery
Educational Activities of the Museum :
The museum is also
engaged in Public Education Activities;
- Guided Tours : The
Museum organizes guided tours to school and college students during the period
between July to November. A large number of students from Pune and other parts
of the country and abroad visit the museum.
- Temporary Exhibitions : In
addition to permanent galleries the Museum organizes temporary exhibitions in
Pune and other places, In the last several years more than 50 such exhibitions
have been organized; Pune, Solapur, Ahamadnagar, Phaltan, Islampur, Gargoti,
Sagaroli, Mumbai, Shirur, Angar, Sangola, Nasik, Shrigonda, Bangalore, New
Delhi and recently one exhibition abroad in Colombo. Temporary exhibitions have
also been organized at excavation sites like Inamgaon, Nevasa, Tripuri etc.
- One-Day Workshop in Archaeology and History for School
Teachers : For the last 12 years, every
year the Archaeology Museum and the Maratha History Museum of the Institute are
organizing workshops for the benefit of school teachers teaching subjects like
history, science, archaeology and other related subjects.
